Udyam registration is free, takes minutes, and never needs renewal. Yet many small businesses register and then never use what it gives them. Here are the benefits worth knowing about.
Who can register
Any manufacturing or service business that meets the MSME limits, based on investment in plant and machinery (or equipment) and annual turnover, can register on the government's Udyam portal using the owner's Aadhaar. Traders can register too, mainly to get priority-sector lending. The current limits are on the Udyam portal; they were revised upwards from 1 April 2025.
1. Protection against late payments
Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a registered micro or small enterprise within the agreed period, which can be no more than 45 days. If the buyer pays late, they owe compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and you can file a case with the MSME Samadhaan portal and the state's MSME Facilitation Council.
2. Your buyers have a tax reason to pay you on time
Under section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, a business can deduct a payment due to a micro or small enterprise only in the year it is actually paid, if it is paid later than the 45-day limit (15 days where there is no written agreement). This gives your larger customers a strong reason to clear your invoices quickly. Mention your Udyam number on every invoice.
3. Easier and cheaper credit
- MSME loans count as priority-sector lending for banks.
- Collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE credit guarantee scheme.
- Access to schemes such as interest subvention and subsidised credit offered by various ministries and banks.
4. Government tenders
Central government departments and public-sector companies must buy a share of what they procure from micro and small enterprises. Registered MSEs can also get exemptions from tender fees and earnest money deposits on many tenders, including on the GeM portal.
5. Other benefits
- Discounts on trademark and patent filing fees.
- Support and subsidies under state industrial policies, which vary by state.
- A recognised identity that helps when opening accounts with suppliers and banks.
Keep your registration up to date
Your classification updates automatically from your ITR and GST data, but keep your Udyam details (activities, address, bank account) current so you can rely on the certificate when you need it.

Note on section numbers: the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. Section and form references here follow the 1961 Act, which still applies to returns for FY 2025-26; from tax year 2026-27 the new Act uses different numbers. See our key rules.
