The need
Depending on what you do and where, a business may need FSSAI, Shop & Establishment or other licences to operate. Udyam and trademark registration are optional but often worth having.
Why it matters
Udyam-registered businesses may get collateral-free loans, a lower trademark filing fee, protection against delayed payments and preference in some government tenders, subject to eligibility.
If it isn't done
Without the required licences a business can face penalties or closure orders, and without Udyam it cannot use MSME Samadhaan to recover delayed payments.
What you'll need
Usually: Aadhaar linked to your mobile number, a PAN card, details of your business activity, proof of premises and, for Udyam, your investment and turnover figures.
